West Runton to Sheringham Along the Cliffs

The walk begins in the peaceful village of West Runton, in Norfolk, England. This picturesque region is renowned for its undulating countryside, fossil-strewn beaches, and striking cliffs – all remnants of an Ice Age past. Your destination is Sheringham, a charming coastal town about 2.5 miles to the east, renowned for its vibrant mix of independent shops, cafes, and its scenic cliff-top golf course.

Starting from the heart of West Runton, you stroll towards the sea. The tang of the salty breeze becomes stronger as the seaside looms into sight, and the pastoral beauty of West Runton gradually gives way to the rugged allure of the North Norfolk coastline.

To your left are the massive, stratified cliffs of West Runton, one of the most notable geological features in the region. Layers of sand, chalk, and flint stacked up over millions of years tower above the beach, streaked in shades of brown, beige, and white. This is where the famous West Runton Mammoth was discovered, an ancient beast that roamed these parts over 600,000 years ago.

The final stretch to Sheringham is a gentle descent. As you approach, the terrain becomes more populated; the houses, shops, and cafes of the town spilling out towards the sea.

Before you know it, the cliffs of West Runton are far behind, replaced by the busy seaside town of Sheringham, bustling with tourists and locals alike. The scenic walk ends at the promenade with the refreshing sight of the pebbly beach of Sheringham, its quaint fishing boats and crab pots adding to the classic British seaside town ambience.
