If you’re staying near Woolacombe and want a ride that combines coastlines, climbs, quiet lanes, and a touch of adventure, this 18-mile loop ticks every box.
We started the ride by freewheeling down into Woolacombe Bay. There’s nothing quite like rolling down that hill early in the morning, with the sea glittering ahead and the salty breeze waking you up better than any coffee.
From Woolacombe, we climbed back up to pick up National Cycle Route 27. This section winds behind the dunes and farmland towards Putsborough, with the track rising and falling gently, offering glimpses of the coastline to the west.
After a quick pause at Putsborough Beach, we descended down into Croyde Beach – one of North Devon’s surfing hotspots. The village was starting to wake up, with surf vans lining the roads and the smell of fresh pastries drifting from the cafés.
From Croyde, we decided to climb up to Baggy Point for the views. The track was rough and rocky, but the panoramas across Croyde Bay and back towards Woolacombe were absolutely worth it. On the way out, we realised there was a no cycling sign on the gate – it had been open when we entered, so we didn’t see it until leaving. Oops.
After Baggy Point, we followed Croyde Road out towards Saunton. This stretch is smooth tarmac with wide views across farmland and dunes, eventually looping us around to overlook the expansive Saunton Sands, with its miles of golden beach.
Turning for home, we headed inland through Lobb and North Lobb, weaving along quiet country lanes framed by hedgerows and wildflowers, before passing Bye Cross and picking up route 37 once again for the final stretch back towards Woolacombe.
