If you’re staying at the Caravan and Motorhome Club site near Woolacombe, this circular route is perfect for exploring coastal hills, charming villages, and dramatic sea views all in one ride.
We set off from the Caravan Club site, cycling up towards Bay View Farm. The climb is short but steep, a proper leg warmer to kick off the ride. From here, we continued along the quiet lane, soaking up views across the rolling farmland towards the coast.
Turning down Mortehoe Station Road, the route descended quickly towards Mortehoe – a picturesque North Devon village with stone cottages, a couple of pubs, and narrow streets that feel untouched by time.
After a short wander through Mortehoe, we descended again, this time down the fast hill towards Woolacombe. The beach came into view as a wide golden stretch lined with surfers and families enjoying the waves. It’s always a buzz arriving in Woolacombe by bike, with the salty breeze and lively atmosphere greeting you at the bottom.
But the climb wasn’t over. We headed back uphill to the National Trust car park on the southern side of Woolacombe, ready to join Marine Drive – a scenic track that runs parallel to the beach, high up on the dunes with incredible coastal views. Riding along here is pure freedom, with the sea stretching out to the horizon and Putsborough Beach beckoning in the distance.
At Putsborough Beach, we paused to take in the rugged cliffs and watch surfers carving lines through clean waves. From here, we created a loop back inland, climbing up through Bye Cross and passing Pickwell Down, enjoying quiet country lanes framed by tall hedgerows and wildflowers, before rolling back towards the Caravan Club site to finish.
