If you’re cycling around North Devon, National Cycle Route 27 is a must. This ride down into Ilfracombe offers a mix of fast descents, tight turns, coastal scenery, and a good test of your brakes and bike handling skills.
We started the route by picking up Cycle Route 27, which winds through rolling farmland and quiet lanes before descending into Ilfracombe. The final stretch is steep, dropping quickly into the town with sea views teasing you as you approach.
Once in Ilfracombe, I decided to check out a local viewing point by bike. The climb up was steep, narrow, and ended with steps and barriers, making it pretty much inaccessible for bikes – though I gave it a good try before turning around. If you’re on foot, it’s worth it for the views over the harbour and coastline, but on a bike it’s best to stick to the lower routes.
Instead, I rolled down to Capstone Hill, which sits right on the seafront. This small grassy hill rises sharply from the promenade and offers panoramic views across Ilfracombe Bay, the harbour, and out over the Bristol Channel. Parking the bike at the bottom and walking up is well worth it – the 360° views from the top are stunning.
Looking down, the surf was rolling into the bay, and the colourful town buildings clustered around the harbour below. The breeze on top of Capstone Hill was strong but refreshing, and it’s one of those spots that makes you feel like you’re truly on the edge of England.
