Starting from the Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Site, this ride packs in everything I love about Exmoor: steep climbs, woodland trails, coastal views, and quiet lanes weaving through chocolate-box villages.
We set off early from the site, rolling down into Minehead itself to wake up the legs. The town was peaceful, with the sea breeze carrying the smell of salt and fish and chips (even at breakfast time). Soon enough, it was time for the climb – and what a climb it is.
Heading up towards Moor Wood, the hill kicks hard and keeps on giving. But once you reach the top, the effort is forgotten. The woodland opens out into moorland, with views stretching out over the Bristol Channel. We followed the trail along North Hill, feeling like kings of the world, the sea on one side and Exmoor rolling out on the other.
The route carries on towards Selworthy Beacon, a classic Exmoor high point. The path here is a mix of rough stone and dirt tracks, with heather and gorse brushing your legs. After catching our breath (and a few photos), we descended down towards Lynch, a fast, exhilarating drop through lanes lined with ancient hedges.
At the bottom, the landscape shifts again. We skirted out towards Bossington Beach, with its wide pebble banks and views along the coast. The flat stretch here was welcome after the earlier climbs – a chance to spin the legs out and take in the salty air.
But Exmoor wasn’t done with us yet. From Bossington, we climbed up again to Hurlstone Point, a rugged promontory with dramatic cliffs plunging into the sea below. Standing there with the wind in your face, it feels wild and timeless.
Turning for home, we headed back inland, looping around below Allerford, then weaving our way through Selworthy and Wootton Courtenay before finally rolling back down into Minehead. Tired legs, happy heart.
