A Perfect Loop from Park Coppice: Torver Beck, Walna Scar and the Foot of the Old Man

Adventure details for: A Perfect Loop from Park Coppice: Torver Beck, Walna Scar and the Foot of the Old Man

If you’re after a varied trek that offers woodland paths, rushing becks, wide open views and a splash of adventure, this loop from Park Coppice just outside Coniston is a beauty.

We set off from Park Coppice and headed south, following the path that runs gently alongside the road in the direction of Torver. The morning was still and fresh, and we passed a few early dog walkers before veering slightly west to cross Torver Beck – a bubbling stream that cuts through the lower landscape like a silver thread.

From here, the terrain began to shift. Leaving the roadside path behind, we turned west and started to follow the beck upstream. This stretch is stunning – a peaceful meander through rising fells, with the sound of water and birds as our soundtrack. The higher we climbed, the more dramatic the scenery became, with wild grasses, stony outcrops, and glimpses of Coniston Old Man teasing us in the distance.

At the top bridge – a solid old structure nestled in the hills – we took a well-earned pause. Boots off, feet in the icy water. Bliss. There’s something almost meditative about cooling your toes in a mountain stream with the fells towering around you.

Refreshed, we picked up the Walna Scar Road, heading west across the southern front of Coniston Old Man. This stretch opens up into classic Lakeland grandeur – wide, rolling fells with dramatic crags and shifting light. You can take either the bridleway or the byway here; we opted for the bridleway to keep it peaceful.

The final section was a sharp descent – steep footpaths winding back down towards Park Coppice. It’s a bit of a scramble in places, especially if the weather’s been wet, but totally worth it for the change in scenery and the sense of dropping back into the woods after being up high.

  • Distance: Approx. 6.52 miles
  • Time: 3–4.5 hours (depending on how long your feet stay in the beck)

Highlights:

  • Peaceful Torver Beck valley walk
  • Bridge stop and stream paddle
  • Panoramic views from Walna Scar Rd
  • Steep, exciting descent through woodland
